Join Canal of NJ Society President Joe Macasek to discover how the Morris Canal successfully traversed a nearly 1700-ft change in elevation.
Morris County Historical Society and Morris County Heritage Commission are pleased to present a Revolutionary Lecture Series to celebrate the rich and vast history that makes Morris County so special. Join us for a series of 12 lectures that will cover topics from our area’s role in the American Revolution to the early engineering marvels that forever changed the landscape to the local figures that made national history.
Stretching over 100 miles and an integral to Morris County’s booming iron industry for over a century, the Morris Canal was recognized world-wide for its technological achievements. Cutting through the rugged highlands of New Jersey, it utilized a revolutionary system of 23 lift locks and 23 inclined planes to overcome an impressive elevation change of 1,674 feet along its route. The canal’s famous water-powered inclined planes in particular were noted as an engineering marvel, enabling canal boats to be raised or lowered up to 100 feet at a time. Join Canal of NJ Society President Joe Macasek to discover how this cutting-edge technology and hundreds of employees worked together to navigate NJ’s iron district, spurring the growth of towns such as Boonton and Rockaway and ushering millions of tons of goods and materials across the state.
